Ixobrychus minutus   Little Bittern  Kleinrietreier (Woudapie)
Little Bittern
Modimolle, Dec 2014

Resident. Scarce, though given its skulking nature it is probably under-recorded. Reedbeds, either on dams or where they fringe larger rivers, provide it main habitat, recently flooded sedge beds less so. Most readily detected in summer when males advertise for females by uttering at intervals, and from the depths of a reedbed, a short dog-like bark. Not yet known to breed in the Waterberg although it breeds in numbers in high rainfall years on the Nyl floodplain.
