Ixobrychus minutus Little Bittern Kleinrietreier (Woudapie)
Modimolle, Dec 2014
A breeding resident. Rare, though given its skulking nature it is probably under-recorded (recorded in 8% of the Waterberg pentads); easily overlooked, it is usually encountered solitarily; frequents marshy habitats, especially reedbed-fringed margins of dams and rivers; when breeding, the presence of males, often out of sight inside a reedbed, can be detected from hearing the sharp, dog-like barking call they make when advertising for females. Breeds in summer.
