Ixobrychus sturmii   Dwarf Bittern  Dwergrietreier
Dwarf Bittern
SwebeSwebe, Jan 2018

Summer visitor, present between December and April. Uncommon, given that the Waterberg provides very little of its preferred floodplain habitat – it favours temporarily flooded grassland with trees standing in shallow water. But it is skulking by nature and is a crepuscular species, so is probably also under-recorded. Not yet known to breed in the Waterberg but it breeds nearby in numbers in high rainfall years on the Nyl floodplain.
