Gorsachius leuconotus White-backed Night Heron Witrugnagreier
Welgevonden Game Reserve, May 2008
A breeding resident. Assumed to be rare, though given its nocturnal habits and skulking nature it is probably much under-recorded. Single birds or pairs live along wooded stretches of the larger rivers, hiding during the day in densely foliaged trees overhanging water, emerging at dusk to fish. Pairs nest solitarily, building a small stick nest on a branch overhanging water. Breeds in summer.
