Status uncertain. Rare, with single birds or small groups recorded widely but sparsely and erratically (recorded in 10% of the Waterberg pentads) - probably much under-recorded given its nocturnal habits. Not known to breed in the Waterberg but in years of high rainfall it breeds in large numbers nearby on the Nyl floodplain and these are perhaps the source of the area's visitors.
