A breeding resident. An arid savanna species, common and widespread across the surrounding thorn savanna and where this habitat encroaches into the Waterberg, but restricted within the Waterberg to outliers of its preferred thornveld habitat (36% in, 64% out; recorded in 55% of the Waterberg pentads); territorial, in pairs year-round; a skulking species, its presence usually given away by its sharp duetting call. Breeds in summer.
