A breeding resident. The most frequently recorded woodpecker in the Waterberg, it is common and widespread here, less so in the surrounding thorn savanna (61% in, 39% out; recorded in 78% of the Waterberg pentads); likely to occur in any woodland; usually encountered solitarily, or in pairs while breeding. In winter it is a common member of mixed species bird parties. Breeds in early summer.
