A breeding resident. Occurs widely but is generally scarce given its dependence on sedge- and reed-fringed rivers and dams (recorded in 30% of the Waterberg pentads). Single birds are typically encountered. As yet not recorded breeding in the Waterberg but in years of high rainfall dozens and sometimes hundreds breed nearby in reedbeds along the Nyl floodplain and it is perhaps from here that the local birds originate.
