A breeding resident. Scarce; it occurs widely but sparsely; likely to be found on any of the larger dams; usually single birds, but up to 25 recorded together (Goedehoop Dam, Jul 2008 CWAC count). Breeds erratically in winter in flooded trees standing in large dams.
