A breeding resident. Occurs widely but sparsely across the Waterberg; is more frequently recorded in the surrounding thorn savanna (41% in, 59% out; recorded in 17% of the Waterberg pentads); it is mostly singing males perched conspicuously that are recorded, and in winter this species becomes essentially undetectable. Males frequently reoccupy the same song sites at the top of a dead tree in successive years. Parasitises Red-billed Firefinch.
