A breeding resident. Fairly common in the surrounding thorn savanna but uncommon and localised in the Waterberg, occurring mostly on the fringes and in pockets of thornveld (16% in, 84% out; recorded in 15% of the Waterberg pentads); in summer males are conspicuous but in winter this species goes largely undetected. Breeds in late summer parasitising the Violet-eared Waxbill.
