A breeding resident. A mainly thornveld species, it occurs widely in the surrounding thorn savanna but is scarce and localised in the Waterberg, occurring mostly on the fringes and in pockets of thornveld (63% out, 37% in; recorded in 24% of the Waterberg pentads); occurs singly, in pairs or in small groups. Breeds in late summer using abandoned weaver nests for this purpose.
