A breeding resident. Fairly common and widespread across the Waterberg and the commonest of the three firefinch species in the region (57% in, 43% out; recorded in 65% of the Waterberg pentads); found singly, in pairs, or in small family groups it occurs in most woodlands where there is a shrubby under-storey. Breeds in late summer; parasitised by the Purple Indigobird.
