A breeding resident. A thornveld species which is fairly common and widespread in the surrounding thorn savanna but is largely restricted to the fringes of the Waterberg where this habitat exists (67% out, 33% in; recorded in 45% of the Waterberg pentads); found singly or in pairs; it is parasitised by the Long-tailed Paradise Whydah and the two species have similar distributions. Breeds in late summer.
