A breeding resident. Commoner than Red-collared Widowbird, it occurs patchily across the southern parts of the Waterberg where open grasslands provide its preferred habitat; very localised in the surrounding thorn savanna (76% in, 24% out; recorded in 21% of the Waterberg pentads); grasslands alongside vleis or over damp ground provide favoured habitat; gregarious, in small flocks year-round. From males displaying it is assumed to breed in the Waterberg, but further evidence is so far lacking.
