Ploceus intermedius Lesser Masked Weaver Kleingeelvink
Modimolle, Sep 2016
male
A breeding resident. Generally scarce and localised in the Waterberg, occurring more widely and commonly in the surrounding thorn savanna (47% in, 53% out; recorded in 30% of the Waterberg pentads); frequents woodland, especially thornveld and its associated sweetveld grasses; easily overlooked, its presence often given away by its small distinctive nests which are frequently built under the eaves of houses or in palm trees, both unusual sites for other weaver species. Breeds colonially in summer.
