Amblyospiza albifrons   Thick-billed Weaver  Dikbekwewer
Thick-billed Weaver
Modimolle, Nov 2021

A breeding resident. Scarce, but widespread across the eastern and southern sides of the Waterberg; largely absent from the drier north and from the surrounding thorn savanna (72% in, 28% out; recorded in 20% of the Waterberg pentads); its occurrence is largely tied to the availability of breeding sites, these typically being stands of bullrush (Typha) or papyrus or, less frequently, Phragmites reeds; occurs singly, in pairs, or in small flocks at breeding colonies. It seems that this species was absent from the Waterberg prior to about 1980 and that it is a recent colonist and its range is expanding. Breeds in summer.
