A breeding resident. An arid-country species, it occurs commonly in the surrounding thorn savanna, ranging in places into the fringes of the Waterberg, especially in the south-east (32% in, 68% out; recorded in 41% of the Waterberg pentads); frequents open woodland, especially where the ground below has little or no grass cover; group-living, it remains year-round in close-knit families of 3-10 birds which are territorial, centering their activities around their nesting tree. Breeds in summer.
