Buphagus erythrorhynchus   Red-billed Oxpecker  Rooibekrenostervoël
Red-billed Oxpecker
Zebula Game Reserve, Mar 2019

A breeding resident. Common and widespread across the Waterberg, less so in the surrounding thorn savanna (59% in, 41% out; recorded in 76% of the Waterberg pentads); it is everywhere associated with game or cattle and occurs mostly in wooded areas since it requires large trees for nesting and roosting; a group-living species, found in close-knit groups of 3-10 birds. Its numbers declined severely in the 1970s and 80s from use of toxic cattle dips but, as the map indicates, it has returned to the region in strength. Breeds in summer.
