A breeding resident. A mainly arid-country species that occurs commonly and widely across the surrounding thorn savanna, its range extending marginally into the fringes of the Waterberg, mostly in the south-west, and where outliers of its thornveld habitat occur (33% in, 67% out; recorded in 28% of the Waterberg pentads); frequents open, park-like woodland, favouring areas with tall trees; occurs singly, in pairs while breeding, and in small flocks at other times. Breeds in summer.
