A breeding resident. Fairly common and widespread across the Waterberg, less so in the surrounding thorn savanna (56% in, 44% out; recorded in 80% of the Waterberg pentads); occurs in any woodland, favouring areas with tall trees; often detected from hearing the male's “bruuu” 'telephone' call; a regular member of mixed-species bird parties in winter. Breeds in summer.
