A breeding resident. Common, conspicuous and widespread across the surrounding thorn savanna and where this habitat encroaches into the Waterberg, but much restricted elsewhere in the Waterberg to flat, lightly wooded areas (44% in, 56% out; recorded in 65% of the Waterberg pentads); a group-living species, occurring in families of 3-10 birds which maintain year-round territories. Breeds in summer.
