A breeding resident. Locally common in the southern parts of the Waterberg, but largely absent from the north and from the surrounding thorn savanna (78% in, 22% out; recorded in 33% of the Waterberg pentads); restricted to open treeless areas of rank grass, especially along the margins of vleis; occurs singly or in pairs; it is often vocal and conspicuous. Breeds in summer.
