Oenanthe pileata Capped Wheatear Hoëveldskaapwagter
Alma, Jul 2020
A breeding visitor, present between May and Nov; very localised in its occurrence, but it can be common where it occurs in the Waterberg; is much scarcer in the surrounding thorn savanna (76% in, 24% out; recorded in 19% of the Waterberg pentads); it is restricted to open, treeless landscapes with a short and/or sparse grass cover and is found mostly where past or present agriculture has replaced woodland with grassland; occurs in pairs, or family groups after breeding. Breeds Aug-Oct, building a nest underground in a disused gerbil burrow.
