A breeding resident. Fairly common and widespread across the Waterberg, much less so in the surrounding thorn savanna (82% in, 18% out; recorded in 50% of the Waterberg pentads); found singly, or in pairs while breeding; it frequents all types of broad-leafed woodland, its occurrence dependent on available nest holes in trees. Breeds in early summer.
