Caprimulgus pectoralis Fiery-necked Nightjar Afrikaanse Naguil
Klein Elandsfontein, Nov 2020
A breeding resident. Common and widespread across the Waterberg, less so in the surrounding thorn savanna (70% in, 30% out; recorded in 48% of the Waterberg pentads), it occurs in all types of woodland but especially in areas where there is a thick carpet of leaf litter covering the ground; it is the commonest nightjar in the Waterberg, often detected sitting on roads at night, but its characteristic nocturnal "good-lord-deliver-us" call is usually what gives its presence away; it calls year-round but with greatest frequency during Feb-May. Breeds in early summer.
