Uncommon; occurs widely but very sparsely across the Waterberg (recorded in 8% of the Waterberg pentads), typically in tall woodland; where mature stands of eucalypts occur, these birds often use them as daytime roosts; found singly or in pairs; mostly detected from hearing its far-carrying grunting call at night, Breeds in winter.
