A breeding resident. Uncommon. Occurs widely but sparsely across the Waterberg, always associated with water, either on the margins of larger dams or along the fringes of larger rivers; rare in surrounding thorn savanna (84% in, 16% out; recorded in 16% of the Waterberg pentads); found singly or in pairs; its presence is often detected by hearing its fluted whistling call at dusk. Breeds in early summer.
