A breeding resident. Common and widespread across the Waterberg, less frequent in surrounding thorn savanna (60% in, 40% out; recorded in 85% of the Waterberg pentads); restricted to wooded areas where there are thickets such as along drainage lines and at the bases of hills and ridges; occurs singly, in pairs, or in family groups after breeding; its presence is mostly detected by hearing its raucous call. Breeds in early summer.
