A breeding resident. Fairly common and widespread across the Waterberg, less so in surrounding thorn savanna (69% in, 31% out; recorded in 57% of the Waterberg pentads); frequents both wooded areas and open grassland; single birds may be encountered but it is typically found in coveys of 3-6 birds; its presence is often detected by hearing its characteristic “co-qui” call. Breeds in mid-summer.
