A non-breeding visitor. Uncommon and sporadic in occurrence in the Waterberg, whereas alongside on the Springbok Flats it occurs widely and commonly. Single birds or groups of fewer than 10 birds occur from time to time on dams, especially those in agricultural areas (recorded in 13% of the Waterberg pentads); large numbers occasionally breed colonially in wet summers on the nearby Nyl floodplain.
