An erratic visitor. Rarely recorded, mostly as single birds or in small groups that make brief appearances on dams in the area (recorded in 6% of the Waterberg pentads). Not known to breeding in the Waterberg but in years of high rainfall small numbers breed alongside other communal nesting herons in reedbeds along the nearby floodplain of the Nyl River.
