An erratic visitor. Uncommon. Single birds or small groups occur widely but erratically on dams and associated wetlands across the Waterberg (recorded in 10% of the Waterberg pentads). Not known to breed in the Waterberg but in years of high rainfall it breeds along the Nyl floodplain and these are perhaps the source of the area's visitors. Care is needed to distinguish this species from the other yellow-billed, white egret species – diagnostic are its two-tone yellow (upper) and black (lower) legs.
