A breeding resident. Scarce, but found widely across the Waterberg on dams and rivers (recorded in 31% of the Waterberg pentads). Single birds are mostly encountered, and these move about widely in response to changing conditions. Breeds erratically in years of high rainfall, pairs joining in with other colonial breeders at a few sites such as on the Mogol and Doorndraai dams.
