A breeding resident. Fairly common, it occurs widely across the Waterberg and is likely to occur wherever farm dams provide suitable habitat. Usually found as single birds or in small groups, but up to 53 have been recorded together (Vaalwater Sewage Works, Dec 2018); the widely fluctuating numbers at sites like this indicate that there is much local movement. Breeds in summer.
